Amsterdam Eet

750 years of Amsterdam’s food culture. Nine iconic dishes, from herring to nasi, show the influence food has had on the city of Amsterdam and its inhabitants. You’ll discover where these dishes were eaten, who ate them, and how they contributed to the identity of the city.

The exhibition Amsterdam Eet takes you through 750 years of Amsterdam’s food culture. Nine iconic dishes, from herring to nasi, show the influence food has had on the city of Amsterdam and its inhabitants. You’ll discover where these dishes were eaten, who ate them, and how they contributed to the identity of the city.

Colorful spaces highlight the history of these delicious dishes with (historical) cookbooks and archaeological utensils. The design combines robust typography with hand-drawn illustrations that playfully reference the drawings found in the cookbooks.

The exhibition is a full sensory experience — including sound. This 3,5-minute soundscape takes you through the process of preparing a complete dish: from chopping and kitchen machines to handling fresh ingredients, plating, and pouring drinks.

Alongside this immersive sound design, we took care of the audio mix for a series of thoughtfully placed interviews with voices like Wim de Beer & Jos Timmer (Restaurant De Kas), culinary journalist Hiske Versprille, food reviewer Nana Asare (Connecting Flavors), and Superdushichef Jurino Ignacio.
